There’s a strange moment that happens when you’ve been making electronic music long enough: you realise the tools stopped being the story years ago. The mythology of the studio, the racks of hardware, the gatekeeping around access, all of it evaporated the moment the laptop became the primary instrument of the modern producer. What replaced it wasn’t convenience. It was sovereignty.

I’ve watched this shift from both sides: as an artist, and as someone who has built labels, platforms, and ecosystems around the culture. When I started, the studio was a destination. You saved for it. You booked it. You watched the clock. You decided under pressure because the room was expensive and the engineer was waiting. Creativity was something you squeezed into a window.

Today, the window is gone. The room is wherever you decide it is.

The rise of royalty‑free loops and sample packs didn’t cheapen the craft — it expanded the vocabulary. A loop isn’t a shortcut; it’s a fragment of potential. A starting point. A texture waiting to be bent into something personal. The producers who thrive now aren’t the ones with the biggest arsenals — they’re the ones who know how to listen, how to curate, how to shape the infinite into something with identity.

My own process has shifted in ways I couldn’t have predicted a decade ago. When I’m working on Phraktal material or sculpting the AXIS aesthetic, I’m not thinking about “production” in the traditional sense. I’m thinking in terms of architecture — spatial relationships, harmonic pressure, the emotional geometry of sound. I’ll take a NASA transmission, a field recording from a forest in Wicklow, a detuned pad from a forgotten synth, and treat them all as equal citizens in the same sonic ecosystem. The source doesn’t matter. The intention does.

Cosmic Soundscapes Vol. 1 was built that way — not as a collection of tracks, but as a map. A way of charting the emotional topography of the local galaxy through texture and space. The follow‑up, arriving on Bakroom, pushes further into Spatial Audio because that’s where the medium naturally wants to go. Not stereo. Not left‑right. But environment. Sound as a place you inhabit rather than a file you play.

This is the part people outside the culture often miss: the tools didn’t democratise music. They democratised world‑building. The modern producer isn’t just writing tracks — they’re constructing atmospheres, designing experiences, shaping the emotional physics of a listener’s environment. And they’re doing it from bedrooms, kitchens, trains, hotel rooms, anywhere a laptop can open.

The old model was built on scarcity. The new model is built on abundance. And abundance changes the psychology of creation.

When everyone has access to the same sounds, the same DAWs, the same AI‑assisted workflows, the differentiator becomes taste. Vision. The ability to hear something in the raw material that no one else hears. That’s the real craft now — not the gear, but the ear.
